Playing and Singing Venezuela’s iconic “El Tigre de Payara” with First Children’s Orchestra of the South of Dominican Republic

In February of the current year I was invited to teach the children of the school “Girasol”, located in a plantation in Azua, Dominican Republic. Together with my Childhood’s music Teacher Catalina’s Hoyos, I want to bring the experience of the orchestra to the children of the school, so they can, too, discover music as a motor of personal development. This year I will be back to sing with them a very long and funny tail about the legendary amazonian tiger called “The Tiger of Payara”. The song has a message that is critical of the hegemonic masculinity in the Caribbean population, where we find the highest rates of violence against women. Our children of the school Girasol will play in the orchestra, but also dance, sing and act on stage. They have already created a choreography and I have no doubt this will be an enormous concert where the children’s creativity will have a central place. I really need your support in my idealistic crazy tour, in which I meet the people and the places where the first Sarabands and Fandangos sprouted.

Singing a Jota in its Cradle-town: Épila, Spain

A few days ago I was in a little town near Saragossa, singing at a Jota school of renowned tradition. Through the guidance of my Teacher Sonia Platero I was introduced directly to the heart of the communal life of the inhabitants of Épila, Aragón, who participate actively in preserving traditional singing. Jota del Ebro (The Jota of the Ebro Valley) is a style of four stanza Strophe, sung in a specific intonation and order, recited freely to a simple chord alternation (I - V or Tonic -Dominant). The ornamentation is an elaborated throat drawing technique, which reminds of XVII century vocal italian lines while at the same time being reminiscent of Arabic singing vocal techniques. I saw the caves where the Indi-Roma (“Gypsy”) Community still live! Just like it happened in the flamenco cradle of Granada, but here in better conditions. In the case of the Jota-Song, the Moorish heritage has had a history of success no other tradition in Spain besides the Fandango. The Jota has passed officialized by the establishment since the Spanish independency at the beginning of the 19th century, until Francisco Franco, big devote of the Aragonese Virgen del Pilar and her Song, died in 1975. Since then, efforts to preserve the professional status of Jota-Singers has decayed, but the Jota School “Estilos de Épila” make an ennormous contribution to the production of high-level Jota-performers, equipped with a solid technical knowledge. In this little Blog I will be elaborating on some of the insights I gained.
